Are you prepared for that coming office party? Many times, office parties can be a bit awkward as you are bringing the fun social part of a
party into the serious business atmosphere of work.
For most of us, we need to keep in mind not to cross certain lines which can spell disaster for us in the office. We need to be mindful of
keeping the right balance without causing embarassment to ourselves and our colleagues. Here are a few office party tips, or if you prefer
they can also be known as business etiquette tips, to help you survive the office party without becoming the talk around the water cooler
for all the wrong reasons.
Be There
Believe it or not, but most people dread going for the office party. Afterall, they have just spent the last 40 hours or so in the last week in
the company of these people. Why would you want to spend another 4 hours or so together in an evening?
However, keeping things in perspective, you do need to turn up for it or else you might just be labeled as a lone ranger or someone who
lacks team spirit by your colleagues or worse, your superiors. Another thing to note is to be punctual. It is always good to be there early
so that you can find time to mingle with other guests.
Be Properly Dressed
Never turn up for the party with an outrageous outfit - unless the theme is fancy dress. Dress appropriately and your best. Ladies,
especially, have to be mindful. No one wants to receive unwanted attention from others from what you did not wear. So be professional
and look good.
Be Heard And Seen
Such an occasion is a great opportunity for you to rub shoulders with senior management which you may not have contact with. Rather
than spending all night talking to your colleagues, why not take the effort to introduce yourself to the senior management. Very likely,
they are more friendly in such an informal settings.
Be Prepared
Some parties are to mark the key achievements in the year. If you are one of those to be honored, make sure that you know what you
have to do. Be prepared to give a thank you speech if needed. For any speeches, it is wise to keep it short so that the flow of the party is
not disturbed.
Be Polite
Alcohol is likely to be free flowing. While you may enjoy yourself, you should not be a drunk and make a nuisance of yourself. Afterall,
you are being watched by others who will be working with you even after the party.
That said, be sure to show your appreciation to the organizing committee after the party. They will be most glad to know that the party
has gone well and would be happy to know that there are those who appreciate all their hard work.
With these tips in hand, you will be sure to have a great time at the office party. Enjoy!
Office Party Tip #1
Depending on the theme of the party, you need to dress suitably. While you do not have to wear a suit and tie, you should not dress
down or too casually. Torn jeans and sneakers may not be appropriate. When in doubt, ask. |
Office Party Tip #2
Tell jokes that are entertaining but not rude. When in doubt, don't. Often when people think they are entertaining, they are not.
Remember that what seems funny to one person can be offensive to someone else. |
Office Party Tip #3
Show Appreciation. Nothing is better than a simple thank you to the party organizers. You can truly make their day by showing that you appreciate their
efforts and time in organizing the party for your office. |
